Who is The Reckless General?

Reckless General Records is the brainchild of Iain Crummie, Newcastle-based songwriter and bass player of Indie band the Soviets. While gigging the local circuit as part of both of these projects, a significant crossover in the audience demographic began to present itself, and with his background in marketing Iain wanted to find a way to exploit this phenomenon. The answer was found in the creation of an independent record label to sign both artists, and RGR was born.

In its current incarnation, the project consists of The Soviets, Iain Crummie, and Hattie Murdoch; a local performer with a promising aura. Aside from her formidable songwriting talents, Hattie has contributed to Iain’s original performances for a number of years, and continues to collaborate with members of The Soviets and many other musicians in the Northeast.
One of the key strengths of the project is the pooling of resources, benefiting from personnel experienced in production, marketing, networking, law, and graphic design. The only external contributor of RGR, technical director Darren Coleman provides the computing skills to build, manipulate, and maintain many marketing tools online, rendering the project virtually self-sufficient.

Employing The Soviets as the flagship group of the strategy’s first phase, RGR aims to promote its acts within the conditions of an ever-changing market, taking advantage of the recent developments and reorganization of the entertainment industry infrastructure. Although many acts are either creating Indie labels, or releasing their own music without label backing, we believe that RGR is the only project built around a collaboration between multiple and diverse artists. We believe that this is the future of record label operations, and once the returns from The Soviets are assured, phase two will see the focus shifted to Hattie’s project, with view to sign more acts in the future.

The project has already been very successful in promoting RGR-orientated gigs at small venues in and around Newcastle, and plans a high-profile launch at the Cluny on February 27th, before taking the three acts further afield on a national scale. The night will feature full live sets from all three acts currently signed to Reckless General Records.
